Fritz!Box 7390 O2 Broadband UK Connection Settings

I recently replaced my Cisco 877W with a Fritz!Box 7390, because I’m a tart, and I wanted built in gigabit ethernet, 802.11n, IPv6, and a whole bunch of other fun stuff.

It was a bit of a fiddle to get it connected up to my O2 Broadband connection (as O2 uses totally different ADSL settings to most UK ISPs), so I figured that I should probably document the connection settings somewhere, ready for the day that I tweak something a little too far and have to factory reset everything ;-)

(These settings are all with expert mode turned on, so remember to turn on expert mode before whinging that you can’t find one of these options).

On the Fritz!Box 7390, click “Internet”, then “Account Information”. Settings as follows:

Connect Via: “Internet connection via DSL”
Operating Mode: “Use one Internet connection for all computers (router)
Account Information: “No account information required (in accordance with RFC 1483 / RFC 2684)”
Connection settings:
VPI: 0
VCI: 101
Encapsulation: Bridged (also tick “Obtain the IP adress automatically (DHCP)”)
Select “Set the speeds of the DSL line automatically”.

Things to note, these settings work for me, YMMV ;-) These settings are for the O2 Home Broadband LLU product without a static IP. Obviously, if you have a static IP, or use the non-LLU O2 connection, these settings will require modification.

[UPDATE: I added my IPv6 stuff on a new post, Fritz!Box 7390 Hurricane Electric TunnelBroker.net IPv6 tunnel, enjoy]

    Hi Mat,
thanks for documenting your set up notes with the Fritzbox on O2, very different that the other providers. Does O2 have IPv6 on your line already? The O2 enables Annex M on ADSL services – do you notice faster upstream with the Fritzbox?
    cheers,
    Lain

    Hi Lain,

I’m currently on Annex A, as I am about as far away as it’s possible to be from my exchange. O2 actually contacted me after a couple of weeks and told me my speeds weren’t high enough, so they were going to drop me down to the ADSL billing instead of ADSL2, which was rather nice of them. My sync speeds are currently 7.2Mbps down, and 1.0Mbps up.

As for IPv6, I tend to get the telephone/email equivalent of a blank face whenever I ask about that, so I’m currently running a Hurricane Electric tunnel (from tunnelbroker.net ), which so far works fine for me – that’s set up as a 6 in 4 endpoint on the Fritz!box, and is probably something I should add to this post, ready for the day I tweak it too far.

    Hi Mat
Thank you very much for the instructions, just one question though, what do you put in the option DHCO Host name?
    Thanks
    Aun

    Hi Aun,
I don’t recall putting anything specific into the DHCP host name box, and checking my web interface just now I can see that it says “fritz.fonwlan.box”, which I would assume is something that the box auto-filled. As far as I’m aware, it shouldn’t matter what goes in that box for O2.
